Khun Bee’s

Facts at a glance

Distance: 110 kilometres

Elevation Gain: 985 metres

Terrain: Flat then rolling

Type: There and back

Road surface: Poor to excellent

Traffic: Moderate to quiet

When: Tuesdays, 07.30 from Casa Del Cafe

The regular ride to Khun Bee’s is one of the most popular and frequently ridden of all the Chiang Mai rides. If it’s a Tuesday, you can bet that a group of cyclists will leave from Casa Del Cafe, ride 55 kilometres or so to a large but otherwise nondescript store and after a stop for refreshments and a natter, ride back to Lin’s Coffee Shop near the junction of Canal and Samoeng Roads.  The section on the Mae Wang Road from the Police Box to the tourist village of SobWin (and back) is pleasantly rolling on a great surface and the group will often break up as some like to attack. This can be great fun, particularly during the winter months when the group is likely to be sizeable.

There is one very short, very steep climb on the way out, otherwise flat and rolling. The road surface on the middle section is not great. This is the traditional route that the regular Tuesday ride did for several years. They are currently experimenting with coming back via Mae Wang, either on the main road or on side roads parallel to the main road. This makes it a shorter ride with a little less climbing. I’ll update the route if this becomes a permanent change.
